José Carlos Gutiérrez with his wife Soraya and son Mateo

UPDATE

José Carlos Gutiérrez of México has been chosen as our "Timothy/Joshua" -- the future leader of the COMIX35 ministry, Lord willing. He and his wife Soraya met with COMIX35 President Nate Butler and the ministry's Board of Directors at our Annual Meeting in November 2009.

Currently his official position is "Ministry Communications and Support," but José Carlos will be tackling a whole variety of assignments and projects for COMIX35 in Latin America and around the world, including a seminar in Mexico City.

We will continue our search for more special people to join the COMIX35 ministry. Because we want to start building a team around him as our future leader, we decided at the Board meeting that José Carlos will oversee future ministry recruitment.

If you are interested in joining COMIX35, please watch this page for future announcements, or write to José Carlos at:

The "Timothys and Joshuas /
Marthas and Priscillas" Project

One of the main concerns for our ministry from the beginning has been:

"Who will be the 'Timothys and Joshuas' or 'Marthas and Priscillas' who will continue this ministry work when we retire or pass on, if the Lord doesn't return before that time?"

So when we ask "Would you like to join COMIX35?" it's not because we're just looking for more media missionaries or staff.

We're searching for future leaders.

We need Christian brothers or sisters who have the strong interest, energy, enthusiasm, and thoroughness necessary to do the work of this ministry – hardworking, servant-hearted, Philippians 2:4 ("look also to the interests of others") kinds of people – who also have some level of knowledge and experience in the field of comics.

We know that the people we seek may be literally one-in-every-million.

So we are holding a multi-stage "audition" to locate these unique people.

The 3 stages are tests that are set up to help us identify:

[1] Interested Applicants
[2] Potential Candidates
[3] Our Top Prospect

If this sounds exciting to you, and you think you may be the answer to our one-in-a-million challenge, it's possible you might have what it takes to be one of the future leaders this ministry requires.

Frida García and Todd Byers in Mexico, 2003
Lau Wai Sang and Lai Pak Lok in Hong Kong, 1999

Here's what you should do NOW to get the process started:

  • Use the Site Map to read through all the pages of the COMIX35 site in order to familiarize yourself with the history of the ministry as well as future plans and projects.

  • Read the COMIX35 Statement of Belief and make sure you agree with it.

  • Download and fill out the Stage 1 Application and return it to us by postal mail or e-mail along with your résumé or c.v. as soon as possible.

All materials submitted by Interested Applicants will be read and reviewed by Nate Butler and the Board members of COMIX35. We will acknowledge all applications by e-mail with 1-2 weeks of receipt. (Please do not postal mail one-of-a-kind materials, such as original artwork, as no submitted materials will be returned.)

Interested Applicants will be informed within 1-2 months whether or not they have been selected as Potential Candidates.

All Potential Candidates will be informed of what will be required to complete Stage 2 and to be considered as a Top Prospect.

In Stage 3, our Top Prospect will have the opportunity to join current staff and Board members of COMIX35 to become acquainted personally, to receive one-on-one “schooling” from staff and Board in their areas of expertise, to go through a COMIX35 orientation, and/or to attend some mini-Missionary Development sessions.

Lord willing, our goal is to meet with at least one Top Prospect every year at our annual Board Meeting in November.

Currently COMIX35 is open to starting Top Prospects in several possible working arrangements, including the following:

  • Living in West Texas USA, running a new branch office, raising personal support, working on ministry staff full-time ... or running the new office part-time and "tentmaking" part-time
  • Living in New Mexico USA, working through the main office, raising personal support, working on ministry staff either full-time or part-time
  • Living elsewhere in the USA, working long-distance as a "tentmaker" cyber-volunteer
  • Living in a foreign country, working long-distance as a "tentmaker" cyber-volunteer

After a mutually agreeable trial period, other living/working arrangements may be desirable or necessary.

Some of skills we're looking for and/or types of jobs our Top Prospect might be doing when they start:

  • Handling all maintenance of the COMIX35 web site and other web-related issues
  • Teaching on comics creation/production, in person at Seminars and/or via correspondence & online courses (including the development of correspondence & online course materials)
  • Assisting with some comic artwork creation & technical production
  • Overseeing some of our P.I.C.S. Projects
  • Writing articles and reports, proofreading
  • Acting as liaison (“point person”) for arts/media events and with arts/media organizations
  • Handling routine office production & printing jobs
  • Handling all shipping & mailing

Additional skills that would be highly desirable:

  • Spanish speakers/readers/writers (other valuable languages: Chinese, Portuguese, French, Russian)
  • Missions background, first-hand knowledge of personal support-raising
  • Hands-on animation and/or film experience
