Native American Projects

COMIX35 is undertaking a series of comics projects for Native Americans and ministry workers who want to serve them in the Southwest USA:

Testimony Tracts
Seminars / Workshops
Retreats & Consultations

Our valuable senior partners in this endeavor are Christ for Native Youth (CfNY) and Western Indian Ministries (WIM).

Please pray for our partners and these projects!

2016

The personal testimony of Chaplain Milt Shirleson, Director of Community Outreach for Western Indian Ministries (WIM) and Christ for Native Youth (CfNY), has been developed into a comic-style tract, Angry Son, with finished artwork by LaTalia Peterson.

A tract about Navajo youth leader Seth L. N. Stevens is in development currently.

COMIX35 plans to produce additional new tracts with WIM/CfNY in the months ahead, Lord willing.

Gathering in Albuquerque, New Mexico
2015

In October, Western Indian Ministries (WIM) and Christ for Native Youth (CfNY) hosted a gathering of Native Creatives at their office in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA, to discuss proposed comics projects, including a suicide prevention tract.

Plans were laid out for a possible personal testimony tract and follow-up meetings were planned.

2014

We held a 1-day introductory comics workshop in Tse Bonito, New Mexico, USA (Window Rock, Arizona, area), led by Nate Butler, in October 2014. We had 5 students in attendance.

A brainstorming session with senior CfNY and WIM leadership prior to the workshop revealed they wanted small personal testimony tracts and comics about/by Native Americans on key issues such as suicide.

Today, there are over 1.7 million Native youth under the age of 18, comprising 31.6 percent of the entire Native population in the US.

As Native youth struggle today with questions about their identity, they often resort to drugs, to alcohol, and increasingly to suicide to escape.

Our partners say suicide is now the leading cause of death among their youth.

Personal testimonies of others who found Christ and survived may help save some.

Lord willing, we plan to link the new comic tracts to our partners’ radio station programming capabilities.

At the end of this workshop we started discussions for additional meetings in 2015.

2013

A meeting with WIM General Director Chuck Harper in April 2013 led to a decision to hold a comics event together that year. We chose November as the month for our first weekend "Comics/Visual Storytellers seminar/retreat" for Native Americans and ministry workers who want to serve them.

We held this event at the Silverpick Lodge in Durango, Colorado, USA, at the same time as WIM's annual retreat for staff and Board members.

There were 8 students in attendance, and class sessions were led by Nate Butler.

Our partners were pleased with the results, as were we, so we began to plan a second event for the following year.
